"Flowers" from Beast of Joy

So if they weren't there, back then
-- the flowers I mean, fifty million years back:
what heart in its want
running over with want
what most playful mind
burst forth from its own center
in colorful fragments of self
its own thinking self.
What heart and what mind
sizzled forth
the law of blossoming
the colors and forms
and such delicate shading
there where the petals are joined
to the corolla.
What heart bending full
with a joy we can barely guess at
what acrobat mind
cast into the mire the first handful
and made petal
pistil corolla and the love howl
of the colorful flower?
