True
hospitality does not judge the merit of another. It does not seek to earn respect or
influence. To be hospitable is to
imitate the generosity of God with the noble aim of striving toward oneness of
being as seen through God’s eyes.
According
to the exhortation in Deuteronomy 11:22, “Diligently observe this entire
commandment that I am commanding you, loving the Lord your God, walking in all
his ways, and holding fast to him.”
God
is gracious, merciful and kind; and humanity, made in the divine likeness, also
should be. “Be merciful, just as your
Father is merciful. Do not judge and you
will not be judged. Do not condemn, and
you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will
be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running
over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be
measured to you” (Luke 6:36-38).
