El Congreso International



The 1st International Congress of the History of the Order of Preachers in America was held in Mexico City from April 24-26, 2013. The program included over 100 scholarly presentations from the University of Cordoba in Argentina, the University of Chile, Instituto de Organos Historicos de Oaxaca in Mexico, the University of Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala, the College of Mexico, UNAM in Mexico, the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico, the Rosary University in Colombia, Saint Thomas University in Colombia, the Autonomous University of Chiapas, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of the Dominican Republic, the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana, the San Nicolas de Hidalgo University of Michoacan, Patronato de Santo Domingo, Comunidad de Padres Dominicos in Guatemala, Providence College in USA, Duke University in USA, Vanderbuilt University in USA, University of Venice in Italy, Brock University in Canada, the National University of Cuyo in Argentina, the Iberoamerican University in Mexico, the Industrial University of Santander in Colombia, the Dr. Jose Maria Luis Mora Institute of Research in Mexico, the Alfredo Harp Helu Foundation, the Institute of Historical Research at Saint Thomas Aquinas University in Argentina, the University of the Andes in Venezuela, the Autonomous University of Baja California in Mexico, the Andres Bello Catholic University in Venezuela, the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, the Dominican Institute of Historical Research in Queretaro, the Autonomous University of Puebla, the Dominican House of Studies in DC, US, Dominican College in Ottawa, Canada, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose and the McGreal Center for Dominican Historical Studies, the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, the Federal University of Tocantins in Brazil, the Vicarate of Santo Rosa in Lima, Peru, the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Musicography in Mexico, the Central Cultural House of Saint Dominic in Guatemala, the University of Puerto Rico, the College of Michoachan, the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, Central University of Venezuela, the University of Sciences and Arts in Chiapas, Mexico, Queens College at City University in New York, US and our hosts for the congress, the Central Cultural University in Mexico.  In addition to the great cultural diversity represented, nearly half of the presenters were women.  However, my presentation on European Influences on Dominican Congregations founded in the United States during the Expansion Period, 1850-1950 was the only one about the experience of Dominican women in the Americas.  At the next congress in 2016 I hope there will be more presentations on the experience of Dominican women.
